Yoga is a great stress reliever that uses exercises to bring the mind, body and spirit into unity with each other. Here are five tips that will help you benefit the most from what yoga can offer you.

1. Talk to your doctor. If you have any type of medical condition, it is always advisable to discuss any exercise routine with your doctor before starting out. By discussing what poses you are interested in doing, he/she will be able to advise against any that might cause problems with an existing condition.

2. Choose a yoga class that fits your level of experience. If you've never taken a yoga class before, then obviously you should start with a beginner's class. Talk to the instructor before signing up for the class so the two of you can best determine the best class for you. As you get more familiar with yoga, you can then move into more advanced classes, taking it at your own pace.

3. Listen to your body. We often tend to ignore the warning signs that our body sends us but we do so at our own peril. Especially if you have a condition such as a bad back or bad knees, be sure to discuss this with your instructor so that the two of you can decide how far you should or shouldn't take a certain pose.

4. Find a yoga buddy. It's always easier to stick with something if you have a buddy and yoga is no different. Not only will this help with your motivation level but it may also help reduce the possibility of injuries as you can watch out for each other.

5. Eat after doing yoga instead of before. Wait at least two hours after eating before practicing yoga. While an empty stomach is generally best, for some people a hungry stomach keeps them from thinking clearly. A relatively empty stomach will allow you to focus on the poses and also enjoy all the relaxing and meditative benefits of the exercises.

So now that you know some precautions to take before starting out with yoga it is time to get started and get on the road to a more centered life.
